Exports of italian leather goods are picking upMore than 75% of italian leather goods are sold abroad, in 125 countries, for a total of more than 4 billion euros

The total turnover of the Italian tanning industry is predicted to experience a 9 percent increase in the volume of exports and about a 1 percent increase value-wise.

This is the estimate formulated by UNIC (Unione Nazionale Industria Conciaria [National Union of the Tanning Industry]), on the strength of partial data currently available (first 9 months).
this means that the italian leather industry (17,612 workers, more than 1,200 businesses, annual sales of € 5 billion) breaks the negative trend that characterized the last two years.

“this international growth should result in an increase in production volume, and in a reassuring stability value-wise”

states a note by UNiC.

Among the intended uses is the good trend in demand for auto interiors and the substantial posi- tivity of interior design. Fashion customers move randomly: leather goods are confirmed as gener- ally more successful than footwear, with a persistent focus on price.

As far as foreign countries are concerned, we witness an increase in the Chinese area, which has turned positive again after two years: +7%. the United Kingdom (+7%) and Vietnam (+14%) are doing well, while the flows towards the US remain stable after seven years of constant increases.

In Europe a slight general decrease can be witnessed. Nevertheless the data concerning the old Continent are interesting when interpreted to detect the new geography of production delocalisa- tions. indeed, shipments to romania, tunisia, Bulgaria and Serbia are decreasing, while those to albania, the Czech republic and Hungary are increasing.
