Hope for the second Half-year
According to the analysis provided by Lineapelle, a leading observatory of the leather world, 2016 was not a brilliant or dynamic year.
In fact, the ill effects of the weak global economy have been felt by the leather industry. The focus on Italy highlights a slowdown (-2% in square metres and -4% in value), reflecting a 5% drop in exports and a 2.3% drop in sales to Italian customers. But the past has passed, even though the first months of 2017 have not registered a major and uniform change of pace in demand and production dynamics.
Uncertainty prevails among tanneries – say Lineapelle – at least as regards the first half of the year; there is greater confidence in a more convinced recovery in the second half.
In all this, footwear does not seem to have signs of growth on the horizon, leather goods seem to be doing a little bit better, while the only sector that remains dynamic is the automotive sector, which is accompanied by the luxury sector. However, the future of leather is unclear, a compartment that is still lost in the uncertain and not very bright fog of manufacturing demand.
