It is clear that the leather sector achieves the best results when it encounters the automotive market. This slice of the sector, in fact, has been growing steadily since 2010. Today it recorded an increase of 30.3% leading the market basket to be worth 70,1 billion dollars, with the average price for each session going from 742 to 800 dollars. The automotive market seems to be doing well, while other sectors are suffering, and the leather world has to face many challenges, some of which were discussed at the recent IULTCS international conference held in Brazil: from design to sustainability, passing through research of the automotive compartment. Based on the concepts and ideas emerging from this event, we propose an interesting technical article on an unusual theme: wet-wine tanning. Mike Redwood goes back to the discussion of the challenges facing the compartment, indicating the hot topics on which to focus on now and later: new materials in competition with leather and the strengths and weaknesses of leather in the debate on eco-sustainability. He suggests to develop a vision that can support the world of leather, proposing long-range solutions with the perspective of astronauts looking at the earth from space.
