A study by Stefani Chimis to make leather more waterproof

Leather UmbrellaAn all-leather umbrella?

No, it’s not impossible as long as the leather is completely water-repellent. That in the photo is not al illusion but the result of advanced research by the Veneto company Stefani Chimis which specializes in developing products for dyeing, retanning, fatting and finishing leather.

Dedicated to studying how to strengthen nano compounds with water-repellent properties, the research focused particularly on what causes the so-called “lotus leaf” effect – based on the roughness created by micro and nano structures, combined with a highly waterproof surface – trying to reproduce this effect artificially on unfinished leather crusts
