The health alarm tied to the Coronavirus epidemic (with the first Italian infection reported on the last day of the fair) only grazed the 2020 edition of Simac Tanning Tech, which managed to take place regularly (at Fieramilano Rho from 19 to 21 February ) and closing with a positive balance despite the difficult economic situation and low expectations. The technology event for leather ended in fact with more than a positive judgement by most exhibitors, especially for the quality of the demand expressed by visitors whose number “exceeded expectations, confirming the industry leadership of the exhibition’s technological proposal in the international panorama of production systems”, as organisers say.

“We are very satisfied with the result achieved in this edition – comments the President of Assomac, Gabriella Marchioni Bocca – especially considering the premises from which we started and given the global economic and health situation. We have recorded good presences from all markets, excluding comprehensibly Chinese ones. The interest in sustainable solutions and innovations and the conjunction with Lineapelle, Micam and Mipel were factors that enhanced the excellence of the sector’s supply chain”.
The comments of the exhibitors at the show are positive, as Mauro Bergozza, managing director of Bergi confirms: “It was a good fair, which gave us more than we could have expected. We have seen a good presence of Turks, Eastern Europeans, but also Spaniards, Portuguese and French. I think the conjunction with the footwear and handbags fairs on the first day was also very useful”.
The entrepreneur Marco Agostini of Mecman was also more than satisfied: “On the eve of the sector’s fair there was a lot of pessimism and some wondered if it made sense to exhibit at a time of great uncertainty like this. We ourselves came to the fair without high expectations and instead it went very well: we had many interesting contacts and even signed an important order already on the first day”.
Satisfactory results also according to Laura Bertacco, Ceo of Officine di Cartigliano: “I guess it went better than expected with a plus of visitors that we didn’t expect. I applaud the decision to confirm the event at a time when the suspension could have seemed more logical. President Marchioni Bocca made a courageous decision that proved to be strategic (also in light of what happened afterwards, editor’s note).
From the technology world comes a strong reference to the sustainability theme, considered in all its ethical, social and environmental aspects. A strong signal in this direction has come from Assomac itself, the national association of technology manufacturers, which has always been on the front line when it comes to these issues. A commitment that the president of Assomac wanted to make more concrete by financing an agro-forestry project carried out in collaboration with the Treedom platform: the association purchased 500 trees to be planted in Madagascar and donated to associated companies and other supply chain associations. On the first day of the fair, Marchioni Bocca invited the president and general manager of Unic – Italian Tanneries, Gianni Russo and Fulvia Bacchi, together with the presidents of Assocalzaturifici, Assopellettieri and Unpac, to donate them the plants but also to reaffirm the need for a joint effort to defend the wealth of expertise, abilities and passion th
at have characterised the ten-year development and sector leadership worldwide. “Being sustainable for companies in our sector is now an essential condition – concludes Marchioni Bocca -. This is what the market expects from us, which needs sustainable technologies to reduce water and energy consumption and contain CO2 emissions. It is part of our social responsibility both as entrepreneurs and inhabitants of the world”.
Technological innovation, automation and new production solutions have distinguished the proposal of the 324 exhibiting companies (from 25 countries). The fair was also an opportunity to open a window on the future of manufacturing production thanks to the Innovation Corner, a project developed by ITA Agenzia in collaboration with Assomac, and dedicated to the most innovative proposals for the integration of industry 4.0 solutions.
The appointment with Simac Tanning Tech is renewed in February 2021.
