The LESSWATT system, a European project aimed at improving the environmental and economic sustainability of purification plants, is being tested at the Cuoiodepur Consortium purification plant in Ponte a Egola (Pisa). LESSWATT’s goal is to develop an innovative system in order to evaluate and minimise greenhouse gas emissions produced by the oxidation tanks of purification plants. The instrument used is a drone prototype (LESSDRONE) to monitor the oxygen transfer efficiency in operating conditions and a protocol that uses the complex collected process information to translate them into actions aimed at minimising the carbon footprint of the plants and their energy consumption. The reduction of energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions will improve the economic-environmental sustainability of purification plants.
The LESSWATT project has been promoted by Cuoiodepur together with the University of Florence – Department of Civil, Constructional and Environmental Engineering (DICEA), UGENT – Department of Mathematical Modelling, Statistics and Bioinformatics (BIOMATH), West System and Utilitas Pro Water-Energy-Environment.
