Strength through unity, so there are two colours instead of just one. This year the Pantone Color Institute, an icon of the design world, has chosen two shades for 2021: PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray and PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating. A concrete gray and a warm and vibrant yellow, colours that – especially in combination – aim to convey strength and positivity.
The Pantone Color Institute is the world’s greatest chromatic authority and each year indicates a shade that inspires fashion trends and even more so those of design. This is the second time two colours are selected, but it is the first time that an achromatic tone such as gray is selected. The explanation is that in such a difficult year we need to rely on each other for new hope. Hence the decision to select “two independent colours that go really well together”.  According to experts, this illuminating yellow conveys joy and hope, with its dynamic nuance it manages to give brightness even to the darkest environments, always maintaining sophistication. The Ultimate Gray, on the other hand, is a reference to solid and reliable elements, which last over time and offer a solid foundation. Although the two colours are in contrast and independent, they can be perfectly combined, without one being cancelled by the other.
