An interview with Gabriella Bocca, vice-president of ASSOMAC who explained why the fair of technology for the leather industry is to be held later

News about the move to Milan for Lineapelle has gone round the world as has that of its new earlier dates: from 10 to 12 September, exactly a month before the usual appointment in October.
On the other hand there has been little talk about the future of Simac Tanning Tech, the technology event for footwear, leather goods and tanning usually held concurrent with the autumn edition of Lineapelle. Torinese entrepreneur Gabriella Marchioni Bocca, vice-president of ASSOMAC, helped us understand the workings of the sector.

– Lineapelle has a change of dates and venue. What about Simac Tanning Tech?

Our fair Simac Tanning Tech intends to remain linked to Lineapelle because the combination of the two events is fundamental from all points of view.
All the same, for next September due to logistic reasons connected with other fairs already set the Milano-Rho fair body could only offer us an exhibition area on the first floor where it would be absolutely impossible to show machines, therefore after the necessary internal consultations Assomac has decided to put off the fair for six months so as to join with Lineapelle at the following spring edition.

– Therefore in autumn 2014 there will be no event dedicated to technology?

Actually we are considering the possibility of organizing a small collective area under the sign of Simac Tanning Tech within Lineapelle already in September 2014.

– So the real fair is postponed to 2015. What are the dates?

At present there are two possible options: 25-27 February or 5-7 March. Hesitation about choice of dates is due to Lineapelle’s attempt to connect the greatest number of events, also including Milan Fashion Week, to attain maximum visibility and draw the most attention. Then we must remember that today there are so many fairs in our sector so it becomes essential to organize really qualified and important events. As Simac Tanning Tech we already have an advantage over other trade shows held round the world in that at our fair people can actually see working machinery.

– How is the trade reacting to the idea of a move to Milan?

Assomac members are mostly hoping that Milan can offer a better reception for visitors to Simac Tanning Tech, considering the great services and international connections.

– How did 2013 go for the sector of leather technology and what are the prospects for 2014?

Last year gave definitely good results. Our sector saw an average export increment of 15%. More specifically, tanning machinery increased turnover by 23%, that of footwear by 8% and leather goods by 13%. The trend appears to continue in the first months of this year so we feel pretty confident about work, although there is always the risk of uncertainty.
