Leader in the production of chemical tanning auxiliaries, referent of the best Italian and foreign tanneries, GSC Group is a very interesting observation point to understand the trend of the upholstery sector. We asked its CEO Adriano Serafini, a few questions.

Adriano Serafini, CEO of GSC Group

What is the trend of this sector as far as you can judge?

“The return to the company after the first lockdown saw the upholstery sector lead the way. The restart registered a good recovery from May to July 2020 thanks to the upholstery supply chain which in our Arzignano district saw a very important increase in production. Some difficulties related to the drop in orders mainly concerned those foreign countries where the Covid-19 wave and consequently the lockdown came after that of Italy. The year 2020 as a whole was certainly characterised by ups and downs with a positive second semester also for the automotive sector that will continue in 2021”.

What job prospects do you foresee for leather upholstery?

“We foresee a big boost in 2021. Thanks to the “nesting” effect, people will pay much more attention to their homes due to the long time spent indoors. As for materials, expectations on leather are very encouraging. The leather’s required technical features and performance in conjunction with the evolution of the market that is moving towards new technical standards and specifications increasingly similar to the automotive sector, ensure that our range of products and the experience gathered in different sectors make our chemical solutions for upholstery particularly interesting”.

What are your latest news?
“In times of pandemics, even the technical requirements of leathers are destined to undergo some changes. Consumer needs are oriented towards ‘health characteristics’ and all leather items are subject to more cleaning and sanitation. We have studied alcohol-based finishing products that are resistant to cleaning but without compromising the characteristics of the finished leather that our customers require”.
